How to Entertain Spring Breakers
I don't know what to do with these kids this week. Everyone is out of school on spring break, but so far the weather has been cold and gloomy. If the sun peeks out from behind the clouds for just a moment, the boys run outside seeking Spring. But it's just not "springy" enough out there, and the neighbor boys aren't around, so they bore quickly.
It's not so easy keeping five active boys of five different ages entertained over spring, summer, or Christmas break. Zachy still naps twice a day, and often his naps don't coincide with Samuel's afternoon nap. So, as you might imagine, it's hard to leave the house at all during the day! With the weather not so nice out, that doesn't leave much for the older boys to do during naptime (especially since they need to stay quiet...OR ELSE!) So we watch too much TV and play too much XBox. And the house explodes into even more chaos and clutter than its usually disordered state.
Last night I took the big boys to the YMCA for a youth circuit class. It was entertaining to watch David (who could shed a few pounds) and Alex (who could put a little muscle on his frame) pumping iron! Afterwards, we played ping-pong and then harnessed up for some serious rock wall climbing. Our Y has a climbing tower that is over 45 feet high, and last night Alex and I made it to the very top! David and Joseph also made it high up the wall, and all three boys are pumped to return for another challenge! We had so much fun last night, and I'm glad I had a chance to get out with the boys and give Daddy some quality time with the little ones.
Zachary has been busy perfecting his "toddling." He pulls up and starts walking whenever he gets the chance. After a few steps, he plops down and looks up excitedly, expecting cheers and applause. He goes for his fifteen month well-child checkup tomorrow, so we'll see how he fairs as far as his pediatrician is concerned.
Samuel keeps asking to visit the Ronald McDonald House. It's unbelievable how he remembers so many things from our Michigan stay when he was under two years old and not even talking! I told him the House in Michigan is too far to visit now, but promised that we will take some cookies to one of our local Ronald McDonald Houses later this week. I'm glad I have a little helper who encourages me to stay on top of one of our favorite charities!
Steve and I are having success with ourdiet (ahem,) nutrition plan and enjoying the new foods and recipes along our quest for low-calorie flavor!
The entire family is still not adjusted to the Daylight Savings time change; we are getting to bed too late and sleeping in. It's not a problem so far, but once school starts the warmer weather and lighter evenings will present a real challenge at bedtime!
How do you enjoy your spring break? Are you taking a road trip or doing anything special? How do you juggle work and school kids on vacation? How do you keep them all busy, entertained, and out of trouble? Pass your comments along... this momma could use your fresh ideas!

Play-doh, Bike rides, having friends over, going to cousins' houses, etc. The first few days, I was about to pull my hair out, but now we've all adjusted, and I won't be ready to send them back next week! :) Good for you for getting out to the YMCA with your boys!!! You're such a good Mom!
