Did You Know?... Samuel

Zachary isn't our only baby who has been intrigued with our corner cupboard.  Many of you commented about messes similar to this that your little ones have made with pantry contents:

And FYI... that wasn't flour scattered all over the floor, but cornstarch!  Have you ever tried to clean spilled cornstarch?  It's not an easy job.  But back to our story...

Every child of mine has gotten into this corner cupboard.  What about baby locks? you ask.  Well, it has one.  But it doesn't catch well and the boys have always been able to pry it open, anyway.  And I usually let them.  The unorganized contents of this cupboard provide for some fairly safe and lengthy entertainment, and it usually doesn't take me long to shove everything back in once the baby gets bored.  But there are some exceptions, and one day when Sammy was just shy of a year old...  Did you know... that he got into the cooking wine?!

Once again I must thank my talented mother for capturing the occasion in prose:

The Littlest Lush

Young Sam was very busy on the kitchen floor that day,
While mommy planned a project he was free to roam and play.
Mom chatted on the telephone of fabrics and machines
And Sammy crawled all over wearing “knee holes” in his jeans.

His favorite exploration spot was just outside her view..
That cabinet opened with some work, and he could do it, too!
Although the “baby lock” was closed, it wiggled, if you tried
To pry it loose…so Sammy stuck his fingers in and pried!

And yep, success! The door swung free! Sam chortled happily
And reached inside to grab the goods, and see what he could see.
Oh! Chocolate chips! That crinkly bag! He’d played with THOSE before!
A heavy sack of flour…Oof! It thudded to the floor.

This box of crackers makes a noise! Sam smacked it with his fist –
Then peered into the pantry – was there anything he’d missed?
Well, what was this?! A bottle! Wow! He hadn’t seen that yet!
The sloshing contents might just make a splendid mess, he’d bet.

But caps screwed onto cooking wine are always pretty tight.
Sam grabbed the bottle by its neck and swung with all his might.
The cap popped off! The wine spilled out! It spread across the floor!
Sam shook the empty bottle to find out if there was more.

His fingers felt quite sticky, so he stuck them in his mouth…
It tasted great! And all Sam’s inhibitions headed south.
How could he taste some MORE of this? He couldn’t pick it up –
And mommy wasn’t here to get her little boy a cup.

Sam leaned down toward the hardwood, then he leaned a little more
And pretty soon he ended up spread-eagle on the floor.
When mommy came to check her boy she found him on his tummy
As flat as he could make himself to lap up all that “yummy”!

And though her kitchen was a mess, her little guy was fine.
But we won’t soon forget the day Sam drank the cooking wine!

For our little Sam

  1. I love hearing stories about other people's kids causing messes and mischief, makes cleaning up the ones my girls make feel more like a right of motherly passage or something like that. Although after the doozy Melanie pulled with mascara at our old house ( http://tiny.cc/xmq14 ) we invested in a TotLock for the cabinet that holds my makeup.

And once again, be sure to tell your mom her poem was great - it really set the tone for the story!
