Kids in Action

We have had a slow week, with Joseph and Alex missing a couple days of school each due to fever. This morning David and Sammy woke up with a fever, too! Fortunately, Zachy hasn't (yet) come down with the bug. We're doing all we can to avoid the really bad stuff... This week the three little ones and I made our way down to the health department--the only place in town that still had the flu vaccine. It also seems that we have resolved the insurance issues so that Zachy can get his first Synagis injection in November. And as soon as that H1N1 vaccine hits the shelves, we're on it!

Our vacation from a couple weeks ago was a hit. It was a LONG drive, especially through the winding mountain roads. But the scenery was incredibly beautiful and the kids had a blast (even though in our two days of fishing we didn't even get one bite!) Some of you wonder how we kept the kids entertained on the long road trip. Of course, we had a good stash of sweet and salty snacks that I kept tossing in the back seat as required. (The theory is that if their mouths are full, it's not so easy for them to scream and argue.) And if you can make it out in this picture (we're too cheap for the factory-installed entertainment system):

we suspended a DVD player for everyone to watch movies and video games. That's right--Steve, my brilliant engineer of a husband, actually hooked up the GameCube so that all the boys could play. By the time everyone got their 30 minutes of alloted time, we had passed nearly two hours. I know, I know, that much screen time turns brains to mush. But listen, people, it was either their brains or ours!

Take another peek at the above picture and you will realize how packed we are in our current kid-mobile. We're in the market for a little roomier upgrade, so if you have some suggestions (we would like seating for eight,) please let us know in the comment form below.

If you missed our pictures from last time, here's the link again for our vacation album. Beautiful views, cozy cabin, and even wild elk! This is certainly one recommended vacation destination!

Here are also a couple videos of the incredible scenery along the Buffalo River:

The other day we had some visitors and Zachary decided to ham it up with his sippy cup. He's one hyper-crazy little guy, just like his older brothers. We shot a clip where he gave himself a shower:

By the time he had finished, he was drenched head to toe:

And, as promised, we have a few pics of his first haircut.

The "before" pictures--enough hair to mop the kitchen floor:

(see the teeth?)

The "during":

And the "after" (I couldn't bring myself to cut the hair on top yet):

Finally, I close with the excitement the entire family feels when Zachary reaches a new milestone. In these clips, his big brothers are encouraging him to crawl, which he first started just a few days ago. There's no slowing him down today!

  1. Are those YOUR hands cutting that hair?! You are a brave woman, Michelle! I've never trusted myself to cut the kids hair! I can't believe how GREAT Zachary looks... and happy too! We've had colds here, but not the "bad stuff" yet... praying every day that it stays far away (especially being pregnant!). Hope it stays away from you too!
